National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions has successfully completed its first-ever round-trip flights between Puerto Natales, Chile, and King George Island in Antarctica, offering guests a unique opportunity to skip the traditional Drake Passage crossing. The inaugural “Antarctica Direct: Fly the Drake Passage” journey allowed travelers to fly directly to the White Continent and embark on an Antarctic adventure without the long sea voyage typically required. The expedition sailed to several destinations on the Antarctic Peninsula aboard the National Geographic Explorer ship.

In addition to the direct flights, National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions has also launched a new “Antarctica Direct: Sail and Fly the Drake Passage” voyage, combining a flight with a one-way sailing experience. These new itineraries offer a more flexible and time-efficient way for travelers to explore Antarctica, appealing to those with limited time to spare.

Historically, most Antarctic cruises with National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions have lasted around 12 days. However, the new “Antarctica Direct” itineraries, which range from eight to 10 days, provide a faster option for travelers eager to explore the White Continent. This new offering opens up more opportunities for those looking to visit Antarctica but who may not have the time for longer expeditions.

Sven-Olof Lindblad, founder and CEO of Lindblad Expeditions, explained the decision to offer flights to Antarctica after years of consideration. “We have considered incorporating the flight option for years, but we were concerned about the frequency of flight cancellations,” Lindblad said. “In recent years, our partners have gained more experience, and reliability has significantly improved, so we are beyond excited to now offer more unique ways to explore Antarctica with National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions than ever before.”

The new “Antarctica Direct” voyages provide time-strapped travelers with a more convenient option to visit one of the most remote and fascinating destinations on Earth. The flights, combined with the enriching experience of sailing the Antarctic Peninsula, are designed to offer an unforgettable expedition that blends adventure, education, and exploration.

These new itineraries mark a significant step in National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions’ ongoing efforts to innovate and provide unique travel experiences in some of the world’s most extraordinary destinations. By reducing travel time and offering more flexible options, the company is making Antarctica more accessible to travelers who may have previously thought the journey too time-consuming.

As demand for expeditions to Antarctica continues to grow, the launch of these new itineraries will likely attract more travelers looking for an unforgettable way to experience the frozen continent without the long sea voyage. The direct flights to King George Island represent an exciting new chapter in polar exploration and adventure travel.
