NCL Survey Finds ‘Joy of Missing Out’ Defines Modern Travel

A new YouGov survey commissioned by Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) reveals that the “Joy of Missing Out” (JOMO) is reshaping how people approach vacations. Instead of chasing packed itineraries and nonstop sightseeing, travelers are prioritizing rest, wellness, and meaningful experiences—embracing the idea of doing less but enjoying more.

According to the survey, over 70 percent of travelers are shifting away from fast-paced vacations toward slower, more intentional journeys centered on relaxation and balance. In contrast to FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), which fuels pressure to see and do everything, JOMO celebrates a calmer approach to travel that focuses on presence and peace of mind.

The study found that 77 percent of respondents plan for their next trip to be relaxing and unhurried, opting for simplicity over strict schedules. More than half said cruising offers the ideal environment for a JOMO-style vacation—with the Caribbean ranking as the top region for restorative travel.

“We’re seeing a meaningful shift in how people want to travel, moving away from rigid agendas toward more intentional and restorative experiences,” said Harry Sommer, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. “JOMO travel is about choosing what matters most, and at NCL, we make that easy. From thoughtfully designed onboard spaces to our year-round Caribbean itineraries, we give travelers the freedom and flexibility to truly unwind.”

How NCL Creates the JOMO Experience

Freedom and Flexibility: Guests can design their own pace—without rigid schedules or expectations—allowing for a personalized, stress-free vacation.

Year-Round Caribbean Voyages: The region’s laid-back rhythm and tranquil beaches make it the perfect JOMO destination. NCL sails to the Caribbean with 18 ships, including the upcoming Norwegian Luna™ and Norwegian Aqua™, departing from Miami, Port Canaveral, New York City, Punta Cana, and San Juan.

Private Island Escapes: Guests can unwind at NCL’s exclusive islands—Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas and Harvest Caye in Belize—featuring pristine beaches, snorkeling, and total relaxation away from crowds.

Onboard Sanctuaries: The Mandara Spa, Vibe Beach Club, Spice H2O, and Observation Lounge offer peaceful retreats, while The Waterfront and Ocean Boulevard encourage mindful strolls by the sea.

All-Inclusive Simplicity: With NCL’s Free at Sea packages—covering open bar, specialty dining, Wi-Fi, and shore excursions—travelers can focus on recharging, reconnecting, and rediscovering the joy of slowing down.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s latest findings reflect a growing global trend: travelers are seeking less hustle and more harmony—embracing JOMO as the ultimate modern travel philosophy.
