NCP Launches Cruisin Green Initiative for Environmental Sustainability

The Nassau Cruise Port (NCP) has launched its “Cruisin’ Green” initiative, aimed at fostering waste reduction and environmental sustainability across the facility. This new program engages tenants, vendors, employees, cruise lines, passengers, and local visitors in implementing waste collection and sorting practices to protect marine life and promote greener operations.

As part of the initiative, new recycling bins have been installed at the port, where cardboard, aluminum cans, glass, and paper products will now be sorted for recycling. The goal of the program is not only to reduce waste but to involve the wider community in environmental efforts at the redeveloped NCP facility, which opened in 2023. The facility now includes attractions such as the Bahamas Museum of Junkanoo, an amphitheater, shops, cafes, restaurants, and excursion providers. Additionally, a new water park is set to open later this year.

The initiative will also be supported by the recent additions to the port, including a new cruise arrivals terminal, expanded facilities for the Royal Bahamas Police Force and the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, a new ground transportation area, a hair-braiding pavilion, and an event space offering views of the harbor.

Yeshantai Thompson, NCP’s health, safety, and environment manager, emphasized the importance of the program in fostering a culture of environmental responsibility. “By integrating strategically placed recycling bins, clear signage, comprehensive training, and community-driven initiatives, we are fostering a culture of environmental responsibility,” said Thompson.

Mike Maura, NCP’s CEO and director, expressed the port’s commitment to creating long-lasting positive changes. “Through collaboration with our partners, tenants, and community, we intend to create lasting changes that benefit the environment and future generations of Bahamians for many years,” Maura said.

This initiative positions NCP as a leader in sustainable practices in the cruise industry, and the port aims to inspire others to adopt similar green initiatives for a cleaner, more sustainable future.
