Near Miss Between Lufthansa, Qatar Jets Over Bogota

A serious near-collision involving a Lufthansa passenger aircraft and a Qatar Airways cargo jet has raised fresh safety concerns over operations at El Dorado International Airport.

The incident occurred Sunday evening as both aircraft were on final approach to Bogotá. Preliminary reports indicate that the Qatar Airways cargo flight, operated by a Boeing 777 from São Paulo, was descending through approximately 9,650 feet when it converged with a Lufthansa service from Frankfurt, operated by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner carrying around 250 passengers.

At one point, the two widebody aircraft were reportedly separated by as little as 100 feet vertically—far below the standard minimum separation of 1,000 feet required under international air traffic control procedures. Both aircraft were aligned for landing from the east, placing them on a dangerously converging path during a critical phase of flight.

The situation was resolved when the Lufthansa aircraft executed a sudden climb to above 12,000 feet, aborting its landing approach. The maneuver was likely triggered by onboard collision avoidance systems, which automatically alert pilots and provide instructions when another aircraft is detected at unsafe proximity. The flight later completed a second approach and landed safely. No injuries were reported.

The near miss is expected to be investigated in detail, including analysis of radar data, cockpit voice recordings, and air traffic control communications. Authorities will seek to determine whether the incident was caused by a breakdown in sequencing, communication errors, or other operational factors.

The event has intensified scrutiny of air traffic management in Bogotá, one of Latin America’s busiest aviation hubs. The airport handles hundreds of daily movements and operates in a challenging environment, with high altitude and surrounding mountainous terrain requiring precise coordination between pilots and controllers.

The incident also follows another recent safety concern at the same airport, where a commercial flight was forced to abort takeoff after a helicopter unexpectedly entered the runway environment. That event was linked to communication interference, raising broader questions about coordination across air traffic control sectors.

While modern aircraft systems and pilot training are designed to prevent collisions even in high-risk situations, the close proximity of the two aircraft highlights the importance of maintaining strict separation standards.

As investigations proceed, the near miss will likely prompt a review of procedures and oversight to ensure continued safety at one of the region’s most critical aviation gateways.
