Neptune Aviation to Add Converted A319 Airtankers by 2027
Neptune Aviation Services (Missoula) is expanding its fleet with the introduction of converted Airbus A319-100 airtankers, expected to be operational for the 2027 wildfire season. This marks a significant upgrade for the company, known for its current fleet of ten BAe 146-200s.
Neptune plans to gradually replace its BAe 146 aircraft with A319s, retiring one BAe 146 for every new A319 introduced. The company aims to operate a total of 10 to 15 aircraft, balancing both models based on the evolving needs of aerial firefighting.
The A319 conversion process is being conducted in partnership with Aerotec & Concept, a French firm based in Toulouse Blagnac. Once converted, Neptune’s A319 airtankers will be the first of their kind globally.
Key Advantages of the A319 Airtanker:
- Increased Capacity: The A319 can carry 4,500 gallons of fire retardant, significantly more than the BAe 146’s maximum of 3,000 gallons.
- Improved Efficiency: The A319’s larger size and higher maximum takeoff weight enhance operational performance and safety for both crews and ground teams.
Neptune’s President, Jennifer Draughon, highlighted the strategic value of the A319: “This addition boosts efficiency, safety, and the protection of the communities we serve.”
Engineering for the conversion is underway, with plans to begin physical modifications soon. Neptune will acquire airframes readily available in the market to meet its timeline. This development underscores Neptune’s commitment to advancing aerial firefighting capabilities.
