New Biman Bangladesh CEO Plans Significant Fleet Expansion

The newly appointed Managing Director and CEO of Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BG, Dhaka) aims to nearly double the airline’s fleet from 21 to 47 aircraft by 2035, signaling a substantial investment in new planes.

Mohammad Jahidul Islam Bhuiyan, who assumed the role in May, outlined his ambitious expansion strategy in an interview with The Dhaka Tribune on June 30. “Biman needs a total of 47 aircraft for route expansion by 2035, with plans to phase out six of our current fleet,” Bhuiyan stated.

Recently, Biman’s board approved the acquisition of four A350-900s, facilitated by funding from the UK’s Export Finance scheme. Bhuiyan mentioned ongoing discussions with Airbus and Boeing for additional fleet additions. “We are considering proposals from both manufacturers,” he confirmed, highlighting the airline’s interest in diversifying its fleet.

Biman’s current fleet comprises six B737-800s, four B777-300ERs, four B787-8s, two B787-9s, and five DHC-8-Q400s. The airline operates routes to 33 airports across 17 countries. Bhuiyan expressed plans to introduce new routes, including destinations like Malé, Kunming Changshui, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta, Seoul Incheon, and Sydney Kingsford Smith.
