New US-Africa Nonstop Routes Boost Travel
A new era of direct air connectivity between the United States and Africa is on the horizon as several major carriers announce new nonstop routes. This year, U.S. airlines are launching flights that will simplify travel to major African cities, cutting out multiple layovers and complex routing through Europe or the Middle East.
Starting December 1, 2025, Delta Air Lines will begin daily, seasonal service from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to Kotoka International Airport in Accra, Ghana. Operating on Airbus A330-900neo aircraft, the new route will complement Delta’s existing year-round nonstop service from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to Accra. Travelers can look forward to exploring Accra, a vibrant city that effortlessly blends bustling urban life with a relaxing beach vibe. Must-see attractions include the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, the historic Jamestown district, and the lively Makola Market, where visitors can shop for colorful textiles and handcrafted beads. For a taste of local culture, boutique stores like Calcul and Nakoi showcase contemporary Ghanaian fashion, while Labadi Beach offers live music and horseback rides.
United Airlines is also expanding its network with a new route from Washington Dulles International Airport to Blaise Diagne International Airport in Dakar, Senegal, launching on May 23, 2025. Operating three times weekly on a Boeing 767-300ER, this new service will join existing seasonal flights from IAD and JFK that start in May. Dakar is known for its rich cultural history and dynamic art scene. A visit to Île de Gorée, a UNESCO World Heritage site with deep historical significance related to the transatlantic slave trade, is essential. In addition, vibrant markets such as Marché Kermel and Marché Sandaga offer a colorful array of handcrafted jewelry and woven baskets. Art enthusiasts can explore the IFAN Museum of African Arts or discover contemporary works in the Village des Arts galleries. Group tours from providers like Intrepid and Explore Worldwide are available, along with unique river cruises that showcase the stunning Sine-Saloum Delta.
In another significant development, Delta will expand its service to Morocco with flights from Atlanta to Marrakech Menara Airport starting October 25, 2025, operating three times weekly on Boeing 767-400ER aircraft. Earlier, United Airlines launched a route from Newark Liberty International Airport to Marrakech on October 24, 2024, with three weekly flights using Boeing 767-300ER planes. Marrakech, a city where tradition meets modernity, offers attractions such as the bustling Jemaa el-Fnaa, the labyrinthine souks of the Medina, the elegant Bahia Palace, and the historic Ben Youssef Madrasa. Nature lovers and creatives alike will appreciate Jardin Majorelle and the recently renovated Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden, which reopened on February 2, 2025.
Hotel options in these destinations are set to enhance the travel experience. In Accra, luxury stays at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City and Villa Monticello, with Hilton Accra Cantonments soon to open, offer premium comfort. In Dakar, stylish accommodations like Terrou-Bi and BOMA provide modern amenities in a relaxed setting, while Marrakech boasts iconic properties such as Kasbah Tamadot, the historic La Mamounia, and the recently opened Park Hyatt Marrakech.
