Cross River State in Nigeria has announced a significant expansion plan for its virtual carrier, Cally Air (Calabar), with a commitment to purchase five additional aircraft. The exact types of aircraft have not yet been specified. This development was reported by Africa Independent Television (AIT) and comes as part of the state’s efforts to enhance its aviation capabilities and improve regional connectivity.

Governor Bassey Otu highlighted the strategic nature of this investment during his statement on the signing of the state’s 2024 supplementary budget on July 29. “We are making a strategic investment in purchasing additional aircraft to enhance our aviation capabilities to address the current situation in our drive towards fostering better connectivity and promoting economic activities,” said Governor Otu. This move is seen as pivotal in boosting the state’s economic activities and connectivity within and possibly beyond Nigeria.

The supplementary budget, which brings the total for 2024 to NGN 437 billion (approximately USD 269.7 million), includes an additional NGN 141 billion (about USD 87 million) over the initial NGN 296 billion (USD 182.7 million). While the specific allocation for Cally Air’s fleet expansion was not disclosed, the budget adjustment reflects the state’s response to inflationary pressures and changing macro-economic conditions that are impacting financial planning.

Currently, Cally Air operates by chartering two Boeing 737-300s from Aero Contractors (N2), which also serves as a joint venture partner. The acquisition of five more aircraft is expected to significantly enhance the operational capacity of Cally Air, potentially leading to more frequent services and new routes.

This budgetary enhancement will also benefit other critical sectors within the state, including infrastructure, education, healthcare, security, and social spending, as part of broader efforts to stimulate growth and development across Cross River State. This holistic approach to state development underscores the government’s commitment to not only enhancing its transportation network but also improving the overall quality of life for its residents.
