Nigeria’s Enugu Air to Launch in Q2 2025 with Embraer Fleet

Nigeria’s Enugu State is preparing to launch its new virtual carrier, Enugu Air, in partnership with Xejet, with operations expected to begin in May 2025. State Commissioner for Transportation, Obi Ozor, confirmed the plans during an interview on Afia TV, though industry insiders caution the timeline may be ambitious due to pending regulatory and logistical requirements.
Enugu Air aims to start operations with three Embraer jets—two E170s and one E190—serving major Nigerian cities, including Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano. The fleet is projected to expand to more than six aircraft by the end of 2025, with potential routes extending to West and Central Africa.
ch-aviation data shows the airline is in talks to acquire an E190 from a lessor, though the deal remains incomplete. The two E170s were sourced from Egypt’s CIAF Leasing: 5N-ENR, previously destined for Binani Air, and 5N-ENU, formerly with EgyptAir. After receiving new livery in Johannesburg, the aircraft were ferried to Nigeria, with 5N-ENR based in Enugu and 5N-ENU stationed in Abuja.
Enugu Air is part of a broader state initiative to boost regional investment and enhance business travel options.
Meanwhile, Enugu Airport remains closed for runway repairs until May 6, 2025. The airport’s concession process, led by Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Aviation, is reportedly 70% complete, with full finalization expected in the second quarter. Planned upgrades include international and cargo terminals, MRO facilities, aircraft hangars, and a runway extension.
