Norwegian Air Shuttle to Buy Three Boeing 737-800s for Fleet Growth

Norwegian Air Shuttle has announced it will acquire three Boeing 737-800 aircraft it currently leases, furthering its strategy to increase fleet ownership and reduce costs. In a July 8, 2025 filing with the Oslo Stock Exchange, the airline said the move will boost long-term financial flexibility and operational efficiency.
The transaction is expected to close in Q3 2025 and will be funded entirely through Norwegian’s cash reserves. The company anticipates a one-time gain of NOK 260 million (€22 million), driven by favorable purchase terms and reduced financial liabilities. Norwegian also forecasts recurring annual savings of NOK 25 million (€2.1 million) by eliminating lease payments.
This is the second such transaction in 2025. In March, Norwegian acquired 10 leased Boeing 737-800s, underscoring its commitment to fleet ownership as a strategy for long-term cost reduction and stability.
As of June 2025, Norwegian Air Shuttle operates a fleet of 37 Boeing 737-800s and one 737 MAX 8. Its subsidiary, Norwegian Air Sweden, operates an additional 25 737-800s and 22 MAX 8s. The group also has 50 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft on order, reinforcing its growth plans in the short-haul European market.
The company said the acquisition aligns with its strategy to support sustainable expansion while lowering total ownership costs, enhancing fleet stability, and improving margins amid growing competition in the European aviation sector.
