David J. Herrera, President of Norwegian Cruise Line, reflects on a year of significant achievements and growth for the company since he assumed leadership in April. With the introduction of a new ship, a triumphant return to the Asian market, and the expansion of solo staterooms across the fleet, 2023 was a pivotal year for Norwegian Cruise Line. Amidst this success, Herrera remains optimistic about the future of the cruise industry and the company’s trajectory.

2023 marked a personal milestone for Herrera, transitioning from Chief Consumer Sales and Marketing Officer to President of Norwegian Cruise Line. Under his leadership, the company celebrated several notable achievements. The re-launch of the Norwegian Jewel in Asia, after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic, was a significant milestone, signaling a renewed global presence and catering to the burgeoning demand for cruise travel.

One of the highlights of the year was the christening of the Norwegian Viva, the latest addition to Norwegian’s Prima Class. The ship, which had commenced service in Italy, was celebrated in Miami, marking a grand moment for the cruise line with a spectacular event featuring Latin Grammy Award-winner Luis Fonsi.

Looking forward, Norwegian Cruise Line is excited about the upcoming debut of the Norwegian Aqua in April 2025. This new vessel, currently under construction, promises innovative features and attractions, including the world’s first hybrid water slide and roller coaster, the Aqua Slidecoaster.

In 2023, Norwegian also launched a military appreciation program, offering discounts and special onboard acknowledgments to service members. As a veteran, Herrera finds particular pride in this program’s success.

The year also saw key leadership changes within Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, with Harry Sommer taking over as President and CEO. The internal changes strengthened the company, as the new leaders were already well-acquainted with the company’s culture and mission.

Herrera underscores the crucial role of Norwegian Cruise Line’s employees, particularly the onboard crew, in the company’s success. He praises their dedication and contribution to providing outstanding guest experiences.

For 2024, Norwegian aims to build on the previous year’s momentum, focusing on enhancing guest experiences with longer, more immersive itineraries and a variety of cruise tour options. Recognizing the growing trends in solo and multi-generational travel, the company has expanded its dedicated solo stateroom categories to meet the evolving needs of its guests.

However, Herrera is aware of the challenges ahead, including ongoing geopolitical issues and economic factors like inflation. Yet, he remains confident in the cruise industry’s resilience and Norwegian’s ability to adapt and thrive.

Norwegian Cruise Line will also continue to work closely with travel advisors, leveraging their expertise to attract new-to-cruise guests and educate them on the value of cruising. Herrera emphasizes the importance of these partnerships in enhancing the cruise experience and expanding Norwegian’s reach.

As 2024 unfolds, Herrera’s leadership and strategic vision aim to steer Norwegian Cruise Line towards continued growth and innovation, enhancing its position in the competitive cruise industry landscape.
