Norwegian Expands with 17 New Routes in Summer 2025
Norwegian has announced an ambitious expansion for the northern summer of 2025, introducing 17 new routes, including significant additions from the UK. The Oslo-based budget airline will now operate a total of 344 routes, connecting 128 destinations across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East during the summer peak.
Key developments include the expansion at London-Gatwick Airport (LGW), where Norwegian will add new services to Riga, Latvia, and Ålesund-Vigra Airport in Norway. Starting March 30, 2025, the Gatwick to Riga route will initially run twice weekly, increasing to three times a week later in the summer. From April 11, 2025, the service to Ålesund will also be available twice weekly. Additionally, from May 2, 2025, Norwegian will commence twice-weekly flights from Newcastle Airport (NCL) to Copenhagen, Denmark, marking another strategic expansion by including Newcastle in its UK network.
This growth in the UK is part of a broader strategy that also sees new routes being launched from Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Latvia. The expansion reflects Norwegian’s commitment to enhancing its network across the Nordic countries and beyond, providing greater travel flexibility and connectivity to its customers.
Magnus Thome Maursund, Commercial Director at Norwegian, expressed enthusiasm about the new offerings: “The summer holidays are something everyone looks forward to, and we’re thrilled to offer new and exciting destinations from the UK, introducing direct routes to vibrant European cities. As the summer months are a busy travel period, we encourage customers to plan and book their holidays early to secure seats.”
Norwegian’s extensive summer program includes 167 routes originating from Norway, 86 from Denmark, 71 from Sweden, 25 from Finland, and eight from Latvia. This program is complemented by their winter schedule, which consists of 170 routes to 76 destinations, catering to both seasonal travel demands and offering a variety of warmer winter sun and arctic tourism destinations.
The airline’s operational readiness for this expansion is supported by a diverse fleet that includes 63 Boeing 737-800s, 22 Boeing 737 MAX 8s, 45 De Havilland Canada DHC-8s, and three Embraer ERJ-190s operated by its regional subsidiary, Widerøe.
Recent performance metrics underscore Norwegian’s growth trajectory, with the airline reporting a 28% increase in overall capacity in November 2024 compared to the previous year, while maintaining a stable load factor. This period also saw a 17% increase in average sector length as the airline continues to broaden its network to include more long-haul destinations.
This expansion not only reinforces Norwegian’s position as a major player in the European budget airline market but also enhances its global footprint, offering passengers more choices for international travel. As Norwegian continues to adapt and grow, these new routes promise to provide exciting travel opportunities for its global clientele.
