NRT Gabon Recertified, Eyes Domestic and Fleet Growth

NRT Nationale Régionale Transport (NRT Gabon) has officially returned to Gabon’s skies after securing a new air operator’s certificate (AOC) from the Gabonese civil aviation authority (ANAC) on March 28. The certification allows the airline to resume both domestic and international commercial flights, marking a new chapter for the carrier.

NRT Gabon’s managing director, Anicet Dissouva, announced plans for an imminent fleet expansion. The airline aims to boost intercity connectivity across Gabon and enhance the country’s aviation sector competitiveness, according to an ANAC statement.

Originally founded as National Airways Gabon in 2001, the airline underwent several rebrands, becoming NRT in 2009 and later La Nationale in 2018. However, it lost its AOC and operating license in November 2018 due to ownership disputes. At the time, it operated two Embraer EMB-120 aircraft on wet-lease from South Africa’s Sahara African Aviation for scheduled domestic routes.

In March 2019, Gabon’s Ministry of Transport proposed a solution to the dispute by creating two new entities—Nationale Régionale Transport (NRT) and Nationale Airways Gabon (NAG). Each entity was required to apply independently for AOC certification.

While NAG was recertified in May 2020 and planned to launch services, its operations were delayed and ultimately halted due to ANAC grounding foreign-registered aircraft that had not been transferred to Gabon’s registry and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With its latest certification, NRT Gabon is positioning itself for renewed growth, focusing on expanding its fleet and restoring domestic air connectivity across the country.
