Oakland International Airport (OAK) May Traffic with Over 1 Million Passengers

Up nearly 3% from last May, traffic boosted by new destinations

Oakland, Calif. – June 29, 2023: In May 2023, Oakland International Airport saw 1,002,621 passengers, an increase of 2.8 percent from May 2022. This represents approximately 83.2 percent of pre-pandemic passenger levels seen in 2019, and an increase of 6.9 percent from April 2023. Additionally, May marks the first month this year where total monthly passengers at OAK exceeded 1 million. The last time passengers in a single month exceeded 1 million was in October 2022.

“We’re very pleased to kick off the busy summer travel season with over 1 million passengers in May,” says Craig Simon, Acting Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland. “We encourage Bay Area travelers to explore the new nonstop flights between OAK and Philadelphia, Newark-NYC, and Dallas-Fort Worth on Spirit Airlines. These new flights contributed to May’s strong performance, and we look forward to the bustling summer ahead”

May 2023 Passenger and Cargo Statistics

Oakland International Airport saw 1,002,621 total passengers in May 2023, an increase of 6.9 percent compared to the prior month. This represents a 2.8 percent increase year over year compared to May 2022 when 918,532 passengers were carried.
A total of 495,889 passengers departed on flights from OAK’s runways in May, with 72,295 of those connecting at OAK.
22,723 international passengers arrived at OAK in May.
On a twelve-month rolling basis, traffic is up by 39.4 percent with 11,686,314 passengers this year compared to 8,384,570 during the same period a year ago.
92.2 million pounds (approximately 41.8 million kilograms) of air cargo were transported in May at OAK, down by 7.2 percent in a year-over-year comparison.
