Oceanwide Adds Real-Time Ice Tracking With IcySea

Polar cruise operator Oceanwide Expeditions has partnered with Drift+Noise Polar Services to integrate near real-time sea ice overview capabilities into its navigation systems. The move strengthens Oceanwide’s commitment to sustainable operations by reducing fuel consumption and enhancing voyage safety across some of the world’s most challenging waters.
Following successful trials, the IcySea platform is now live aboard m/v Hondius, m/v Ortelius, m/v Plancius and s/v Rembrandt van Rijn. The software delivers up-to-the-minute data on satellite imagery, ice charts, drift forecasts, sea temperature, and ice concentration levels—vital information for dynamic expedition cruising in the Arctic and Antarctic.
IcySea also features interactive tools for analyzing data, evaluating vessel positions, and planning routes. Crews gain 24/7 software and data analysis support, enabling them to make informed decisions in rapidly changing polar conditions. This capability helps prevent unnecessary ice navigation, delays, or detours, allowing for smoother itineraries and maximizing guest experiences.
“IcySea complements both our existing arsenal of navigation tools and the knowledge and expertise of our captains, bridge officers, and vessel crews,” said Piet Vink, Chief Vessel Officer at Oceanwide Expeditions. “It has proven to be a valuable tool for voyage planning and Arctic and Antarctic navigation.”
By combining expert mariners with cutting-edge technology, Oceanwide Expeditions continues to stand out as a pioneer in authentic polar exploration. Guests benefit from uninterrupted operations and greater flexibility on itineraries that venture beyond the reach of standard expedition cruise operators.
