Oman Air, the national airline of Oman, has marked a significant milestone in its cargo operations with the order and delivery of its first 737-800 Boeing Converted Freighter (BCF). This introduction of a dedicated cargo aircraft represents a major step forward for the Muscat-based carrier.

In the first half of 2023, Oman Air Cargo experienced a remarkable 42 percent increase in cargo volume compared to the same period in 2022. This surge was primarily fueled by the expansion of capacity across its passenger airplane fleet. The new 737-800BCF, capable of transporting up to 23.9 tonnes of freight over a range of 3,750 km, is set to further boost this growth trajectory.

Oman Air highlighted the strategic significance of the freighter, stating, “The 737-800BCF will play a pivotal role in enhancing the growth of the air cargo logistics sector in Oman and beyond. Based at our strategically located Muscat hub, it will strengthen our capabilities in connecting key markets in the East and West.”

Kate Schaefer, Vice President of Boeing Commercial Modifications, emphasized the compatibility of the 737-800BCF with Oman Air’s operations. “The 737-800BCF, offering the right payload and range, perfectly complements Oman Air’s passenger fleet by providing dedicated cargo capacity. We are proud to support Oman Air Cargo with this proven and reliable freighter,” she said.

The 737-800BCF, built on one of the industry’s most efficient and reliable platforms, is an ideal solution for customers adapting to rising cargo demands, optimizing fleets, or replacing older freighters. Notably, this fuel-efficient model boasts up to 20 percent lower fuel use and CO2 emissions per tonne compared to previous standard-body freighters, aligning with the growing industry focus on sustainability.

The conversion of the freighter was completed at Taikoo (Shandong) Aircraft Engineering Co. Ltd. (STAECO), ensuring a seamless transition into Oman Air’s expanding fleet. This addition is a testament to Oman Air’s commitment to enhancing its cargo services and maintaining a competitive edge in the dynamic air freight market.
