OpenAI Unveils “Operator” AI Agent for Travel Bookings

OpenAI has introduced “Operator,” an AI-powered agent capable of interacting with websites by typing, clicking, and scrolling to complete bookings for travel, events, groceries, and more. Currently in a research preview, Operator is available exclusively to OpenAI Pro subscribers.
In a blog post, OpenAI demonstrated Operator’s capabilities, showcasing its ability to find and book top-rated Rome tours on Tripadvisor. Unlike traditional AI assistants, Operator navigates websites in real time, eliminating the need for custom API integrations. It can self-correct errors and handoff control to users when needed, such as for logins and payments.
Several major travel brands, including Tripadvisor, Booking.com, Priceline, Uber, and Hipcamp, are early partners in testing Operator. Rahul Todkar, head of data and AI at Tripadvisor, called the collaboration a “pivotal step” in AI-driven travel planning, integrating Tripadvisor’s hotel, experience, and restaurant data to enhance user experience.
Hipcamp founder Alyssa Ravasio emphasized Operator’s role in making outdoor travel more accessible, offering real-time access to Hipcamp’s private campsites, cabins, RV parks, and glamping options.
OpenAI explains that Operator “sees” web pages through screenshots and performs browser actions like a human user, making AI-driven travel bookings more seamless than ever. Users can also customize preferences, such as selecting fully refundable hotels with free breakfast on Priceline.
With Operator, OpenAI is redefining AI-powered trip planning, bringing conversational agents closer to real-world usability.
