Pakistan International Resumes Paris Flights After EU Ban Lifted
On January 10, 2025, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) marked a major comeback to the European market as its first flight to Paris in four years departed Islamabad International Airport (ISB). The historic Boeing 777-200ER, registered AP-BGK, took off just after midday, with an expected arrival at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) at 16:23 local time. This new service is part of PIA’s broader strategy to re-establish its presence in the European Union following the lifting of a long-standing ban.
The resumption of flights to Paris comes after the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) officially lifted its ban on PIA on November 29, 2024. The ban, which had been in effect since June 2020, was imposed by EASA due to serious safety concerns arising from a fatal crash in Pakistan. In May 2020, a PIA Airbus A320 operating a domestic flight from Lahore to Karachi tragically crashed into a crowded residential area, claiming 97 of the 99 lives aboard and resulting in additional ground casualties. Following stringent safety reviews and significant improvements in operational standards, PIA was able to comply with the EU’s rigorous safety criteria, ultimately leading to the ban’s removal.
To celebrate resuming operations to the EU, PIA welcomed guests at Islamabad International Airport with a symbolic gesture that paid homage to France. The airline proudly displayed a replica of the Arc de Triomphe, and the Boeing 777-200ER was adorned with special artwork: its tail was painted with the iconic Eiffel Tower and “I love Paris” was prominently emblazoned on the nose. These unique design touches set the tone for what PIA hopes will be a renewed relationship with European travelers and regulatory authorities.
PIA now plans to operate two flights per week between Islamabad and Paris, making it the sole airline currently connecting the capital cities of Pakistan and France. This historic route is expected to not only drive passenger growth but also enhance bilateral ties between Pakistan and the European Union. As part of its efforts to ramp up its European network, PIA is also exploring the resumption of flights to the United Kingdom and other European destinations.
Looking ahead to 2025, the airline is working on a comprehensive fleet revival plan. PIA intends to return several stored aircraft to service, including eight Boeing 777s, 12 Airbus A320s, and three ATRs. This move is aimed at expanding its network and ensuring fleet adequacy to support its ambitious schedule expansion. In a December 2024 statement, a PIA spokesperson highlighted the airline’s commitment to high schedule reliability and on-time performance, which currently exceeds 90%—a record that stands out as the best in the country.
PIA’s resurgence in European markets is a significant step in restoring confidence among passengers and regulators alike. The relaunch of the Paris route symbolizes a fresh start for the airline, built on improved safety, modernized operations, and a forward-looking network strategy. With plans to expand its network further across Europe and the UK, PIA is determined to regain its status as a competitive international carrier.
As the airline navigates its recovery and growth, industry observers are keeping a close eye on PIA’s strategic initiatives. For passengers, the return of direct flights to Paris promises a more convenient travel experience and a step towards a new era of international connectivity for Pakistan.
