The Paris Air Show 2023 marked a significant recovery for the aviation industry, being the first event after a four-year hiatus due to the pandemic. With 1,266 order and option announcements, including 1,082 new firm orders, it ranked third among major air shows of the last decade in terms of scale and impact.

The show is the world’s largest and most prestigious aviation event, where aircraft manufacturers, airlines, lessors, and other industry players gather to showcase their latest products and technologies. Leading the show were Boeing and Airbus, the giants of the commercial aviation market, showcasing their new and existing products.

Boeing secured 528 orders and commitments, valued at $60 billion at list prices, for its 737 MAX, 787 Dreamliner, and 777X families. Similarly, Airbus received 496 orders and commitments, worth $75 billion at list prices, for its A220, A320neo, A330neo, and A350 families. Both manufacturers also unveiled new freighter variants of their popular widebody jets, namely the 777X Freighter and the A350F.

The influx of new aircraft orders at the Paris Air Show will contribute to increasing backlogs, as Boeing and Airbus strive to meet the surging demand from airlines. According to Boeing’s annual market outlook, the global demand for 42,595 new commercial jets by 2042 is projected, with a total value of $8 trillion. Airbus’ global market forecast estimates a requirement of 39,210 new passenger and freighter aircraft by 2040, valued at $5.8 trillion.

In addition to the impressive orders, the Paris Air Show served as a platform to showcase the latest innovations and advancements in the aviation industry, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and decarbonization. The Paris Air Lab featured exhibits and demonstrations of various technologies and solutions aimed at reducing aviation’s environmental impact, including hydrogen propulsion, electric flight, biofuels, and artificial intelligence. The Paris Air Mobility platform presented the future of urban air mobility, with several electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicles on display.

The success of the Paris Air Show 2023 demonstrated the resilience and dynamism of the aviation industry. The event attracted nearly 140,000 trade visitors and over 300,000 general public visitors throughout its seven-day duration. The next edition of the show is scheduled to take place from June 16 to 22 in 2025.
