Pegasus Airlines Explores Expansion Through Foreign AOCs

Pegasus Airlines (PC), based in Istanbul Sabiha Gökcen, is exploring the possibility of establishing carriers with their own Air Operator’s Certificates (AOCs) in foreign countries as part of its growth strategy, according to CEO Güliz Öztürk. This move comes as Pegasus continues to expand its fleet, with plans to accelerate growth by targeting opportunities in the east. Öztürk stated that the airline is considering countries in Asia, such as Poland, Czechia, and Romania, where it could establish subsidiaries to facilitate expansion.

The focus on establishing foreign AOCs is seen as a strategic approach to overcome restrictive bilateral air services agreements with some Asian countries. By launching subsidiary carriers, Pegasus aims to tap into new markets, subject to either securing additional traffic rights or leveraging the flexibility offered by independent AOCs.

In the past, Pegasus Airlines took a stake in Kyrgyzstan’s Air Manas in 2013, creating a joint venture known as Pegasus Asia. However, the airline later divested from the venture in 2019. The carrier had also considered launching a Ukrainian unit, although these plans did not materialize.

Currently, Pegasus Airlines boasts a diverse fleet of over 100 aircraft, including various Airbus A320 and A321 models, as well as Boeing 737-800s. The airline’s growth strategy aligns with its intent to explore opportunities in new markets through the establishment of subsidiary carriers, enhancing its presence in the aviation industry.
