Perth Airport Strengthens Ties with Guangzhou
Perth Airport and Guangzhou Baiyun International have signed a memorandum of understanding that aims to drive increased connectivity and boost passenger volume between the catchment areas of the two major hubs. Announced on the sidelines of Routes Asia 2025 in Perth, this agreement marks a significant milestone in enhancing bilateral air travel and trade between Western Australia and China’s Greater Bay Area. The deal represents a strategic move by both parties to promote best commercial and operational practices while collaborating on joint marketing initiatives that will benefit airlines, passengers, and local economies.
According to Zhu Qianhong, managing director of the Guangdong Airport Authority, the agreement is designed to open a vital area lifeline linking Western Australia with China. By increasing the frequency of passenger flights and enhancing cargo movements, the partnership is expected to facilitate smoother transit of Australian seafood to China and Chinese-made goods to Western Australia. Such improvements in air connectivity are not only expected to stimulate tourism and business travel but also to reinforce economic ties between the two regions.

However, Qi Yaoming, executive vice president of Guangzhou Baiyun, expressed optimism that the airline will resume regular, year-round flights at some point in the second half of 2025. Perth Airport CEO Jason Waters emphasized the importance of building robust linkages and forging strong partnerships to restore and expand the pre-pandemic level of connectivity between Perth and China.
