Peru Sees 29% Increase in Visitors in 2024, Boosted by New Terminal

Peru welcomed 3.3 million visitor arrivals in 2024, marking a 29% year-on-year increase, thanks to growing interest in the country’s tourism offerings. The increase is also supported by the upcoming opening of the new terminal at Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM), which is expected to significantly enhance Peru’s aviation sector and connectivity.
During Routes Americas 2025, Peru’s Vice Minister of Tourism, Madeleine Burns Vidaurrazaga, highlighted the importance of the new terminal in strengthening the country’s position as a major air travel hub in South America. Set to open by the end of the first quarter of 2025, the terminal will have an initial capacity of 30 million passengers per year, with plans for future expansion to accommodate up to 40 million passengers annually.
“The entire aviation community in the country is committed to successfully completing the operational transition process,” Vidaurrazaga told Aviation Week. “The goal is to ensure the full capacity of the new airport infrastructure to support the efficient growth of air service offerings.”
The new terminal is expected to facilitate further growth in both international and domestic air traffic, contributing to Peru’s expanding tourism and aviation ambitions.
In 2024, new international routes launched from Peru also contributed to the surge in visitor arrivals. LATAM Airlines Group introduced flights from Lima to Montego Bay, Jamaica, and Rosario, Argentina, while Turkish Airlines confirmed it would begin flights to Lima from June 2025. These routes are expected to strengthen Peru’s position as a growing hub for air travel in South America.
“Lima Airport has continued solidifying its position as a hub in South America, with a higher volume of connecting flights to the region’s main cities,” Vidaurrazaga said.
Looking to the future, Peru is focusing on expanding its connectivity to North America and Europe. The country is also working to secure access for an Asian airline. To support this expansion, aviation and tourism authorities are collaborating with airport administrators to implement an incentive plan designed to attract new airlines and expand existing routes.
“Additionally, efforts to promote strategic alliances continue, fostering joint advertising campaigns between the Peruvian government and national and international airlines,” Vidaurrazaga said. “These campaigns aim to enhance domestic and international connectivity while promoting Peru’s tourist destinations through a diversified offering of airfares.”
With continued investment in infrastructure and strategic partnerships, Peru is set to maintain its momentum as a rising global tourism destination. The opening of the new terminal and the continued expansion of air service offerings are expected to drive further growth in visitor numbers and strengthen the country’s tourism sector.
