Philippine Airlines Appoints Richard Nuttall as New President

Philippine Airlines (PAL) has announced the appointment of Richard Nuttall as its new President, effective May 29, 2025. Nuttall, a British national, brings extensive experience in the airline industry, having held executive roles across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. He most recently served as Chief Executive Officer of SriLankan Airlines, where he successfully led the carrier’s turnaround, restoring operational profitability and contributing to the growth of Sri Lanka’s tourism sector.
Nuttall will report directly to Dr. Lucio C. Tan, Chairman and CEO, and Lucio C. Tan III, President and Chief Operating Officer of PAL Holdings Inc., the parent company of Philippine Airlines. Carlos Luis Fernandez will also join the leadership team as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Philippine Airlines, effective the same day.
Dr. Lucio C. Tan expressed confidence in Nuttall’s leadership, stating, “Philippine Airlines has always been committed to working with the best people across all levels, and I welcome Richard Nuttall as a worthy addition to an already formidable team. I am confident that he will create and develop sustainable growth for PAL.”
Lucio Tan III also emphasized the importance of Nuttall’s appointment, stating, “Appointing Richard Nuttall to Philippine Airlines is an important part of our medium-term and long-term strategy of building a robust management team and growing our business internationally. As President, he will play an active role in bringing a global dimension to the Heart of the Filipino, and I look forward to working closely with him in the days and months ahead.”
Nuttall’s appointment follows the departure of Captain Stanley Ng, who served as PAL President and Chief Operating Officer since January 2022. Ng will transition to a new role as Vice President of PAL Holdings Inc. and continue to serve on the airline’s Board of Directors. Ng expressed his support for Nuttall, saying, “I warmly welcome Mr. Nuttall to the PAL Group. I believe that under his leadership, we will sustain the momentum we’ve built over the past years. Now, I’m ready to take on this new role with renewed focus and commitment.”
The airline remains optimistic about sustaining its momentum under the new leadership. Philippine Airlines posted a net income of PHP 10.01 billion (approximately US $176.7 million) in 2024, following a record earnings year in 2023, which saw profits reach PHP 21 billion (approximately US $371.1 million). With Nuttall’s expertise and vision, PAL is poised for continued growth and success in the years to come.
