Photos and Videos Show Hurricane Melissa Damage to Jamaica Resorts

Hurricane Melissa made history as the strongest storm ever recorded in Jamaica, making landfall on October 28 as a Category 5 hurricane with winds reaching 185 mph. The storm caused severe flooding, widespread power outages, and extensive property damage across the island, including to several major hotels and resorts.
Authorities are now assessing the full scale of the destruction. According to Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett, approximately 25,000 tourists were in Jamaica when Melissa struck, many of whom sheltered in place at resorts.
At Sandals and Beaches resorts, guests and staff followed emergency protocols and remained safe during the storm. “We are grateful to share that all guests and team members staying at our resorts are safe,” the company said in a statement on Wednesday.
Early images and videos shared on social media show damage at several coastal resorts. Photos posted to X (formerly Twitter) reveal significant roof damage at Sandals South Coast in White House, one of the areas hardest hit by the hurricane’s landfall.
Travelers described scenes of destruction, including uprooted palm trees, overturned vehicles, and collapsed structures. Instagram user @travelswithamandat shared photos showing a flipped food truck and portions of roofs torn away, writing: “It’s going to be a long road to recovery for this precious resort and the amazing staff that work here.”
While cleanup and recovery efforts are underway, tourism officials remain optimistic that Jamaica’s hospitality sector—one of the country’s economic pillars—will rebound quickly once safety assessments and repairs are completed.
