The Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics (PIA) School for Aviation Maintenance has recently joined forces with United Airlines through its Calibrate Technician Pathway program. This partnership aims to provide a direct path to employment for eligible PIA students as aircraft maintenance technicians at United Airlines.

As part of this initiative, PIA and United Airlines will collaborate on various programs including mentorship at United’s 42 domestic technical operation stations, as well as organizing open houses and career fairs. These efforts are designed to offer students diverse opportunities for career advancement.

Launched in October 2023, the Calibrate Technician Pathway program is a full-time paid apprenticeship, focusing on fostering career paths for aspiring aviation maintenance technicians. The program encompasses practical training and guidance tailored to specific pathways, including ground service equipment maintenance, facility maintenance, and aircraft maintenance.

The goal of the program is to enroll up to 300 eligible students annually. To remain in the hiring pool after graduation, participating students are required to maintain a high GPA and strong attendance record. United Airlines also plans to engage in various open houses and career fairs at PIA to facilitate this program.

Suzanne Markle, President of PIA, expressed pride in being selected for this partnership and the confidence that PIA graduates are among the best entry-level A&P technicians in the country. Simone Drakes, Managing Director of Calibrate at United Airlines, highlighted PIA’s commitment to student success and shared values, making them an ideal partner for building United’s pipeline of aviation technicians.

With United Airlines expected to take delivery of 800 new aircraft between 2023 and 2032, the airline is planning to hire thousands of new technicians by 2026 to support its expanding fleet. This partnership with PIA is a significant step towards achieving that goal.
