Poland Nears Decision on Strategic Partner for New Warsaw Airport
Poland is on the verge of selecting a strategic partner and minority owner for the Centralny Port Komunikacyjny Airport (CPK), a transformative project poised to establish itself as a prominent transport hub in Europe. The Polish government has shortlisted two formidable contenders for this pivotal role: France’s Vinci Group and South Korea’s Incheon International Airport Corp.
The CPK project entails the development of a cutting-edge airport in proximity to Warsaw, the capital of Poland. This ambitious endeavor encompasses the creation of an extensive network of high-speed railways and roads, expertly interconnecting the CPK airport with various regions within the country. The overarching goal is to invigorate Poland’s economic growth, fortify its position in international competitiveness, and stimulate tourism.
Government Stake and Strategic Partner:
Poland envisions retaining a majority stake of 51% in CPK, with the chosen strategic partner securing a 49% share. The strategic partner will play a central role in steering the development and management of the airport. The government anticipates making the selection by the close of 2023, paving the way for construction to commence in 2024. The inauguration of the new airport is scheduled for 2028, boasting an initial passenger capacity of 40 million per annum, expandable to 65 million by 2060.
Vinci and Incheon: Formidable Contenders:
Two distinguished contenders, Vinci and Incheon, have demonstrated their keen interest and proficiency in the CPK undertaking. Vinci stands out as a global leader in airport operation, overseeing 45 airports across 12 nations, including prestigious facilities such as London Gatwick, Lisbon, and Osaka. Incheon International Airport Corp, on the other hand, manages Seoul’s Incheon Airport, consecutively ranked as the world’s best airport for an astounding 15 years by Airports Council International. Incheon has also been serving as a strategic advisor to the CPK project since 2021.
The CPK initiative has attracted a cadre of international collaborators. Renowned design consortium Foster+Partners and Buro Happold have been entrusted with the role of master architect, while the master civil engineer position is held by design firm Dar Al-Handasah. Additionally, the project has secured vital environmental clearances and garnered approval for its comprehensive plan from the Polish government during the summer.
