Political Unrest Makes Travelers Rethink US Trips

A new survey by Global Rescue reveals that political unrest is influencing travel decisions to the United States, with international visitors showing greater hesitation than domestic travelers. According to the findings, while 52% of all respondents are not canceling U.S. trips due to domestic unrest, nearly 12% of non-U.S. travelers have already canceled planned visits compared with just 1% of U.S.-based respondents canceling travel within the country.
The survey highlights that political tensions and highly publicized incidents of unrest are prompting caution among overseas visitors. Nearly 20% of international respondents said they are actively reconsidering future trips to the U.S. due to political concerns, suggesting that perceptions of instability could impact inbound tourism.
“International travelers are more likely to weigh perceived safety risks when deciding where to go, and media coverage of unrest plays a significant role in shaping those perceptions,” a Global Rescue spokesperson said. “Even if the actual risk to tourists is low, the perception alone can influence travel choices.”
Despite these concerns, the majority of travelers—particularly Americans—are continuing with their plans. Industry experts note that the U.S. remains one of the world’s top destinations for business and leisure travel, but shifting sentiment abroad underscores the importance of reassuring visitors about safety and stability.
Travel analysts say the findings serve as a reminder that tourism markets are sensitive to political climates. Destination marketing organizations and travel providers may need to intensify efforts to communicate safety measures and highlight positive visitor experiences to sustain international arrivals.
