Ponant Explorations Publishes 2024 Sustainability Report

Ponant Explorations Group has released its 2024 Sustainability Report, outlining major progress toward its long-term Blue Horizon strategy—a comprehensive roadmap for building a more sustainable future for expedition travel and maritime exploration.
“Our 2024 Sustainability Report provides a clear picture of the progress we have made as well as the road ahead,” said Wassim Daoud, Head of CSR and Sustainability at Ponant Explorations Group. “We are continuing on our path toward decarbonization and taking concrete steps to reduce our environmental impact, support scientific research, and help local communities.”
According to the report, Ponant achieved a 14 percent reduction in CO₂ emissions per cruise day compared to 2018—nearly halfway to its goal of a 30 percent reduction by 2030. This improvement stems from recent investments in energy efficiency across the fleet and the adoption of alternative energy solutions.
As part of its goal to reach Net Zero by 2050, the company is advancing research in naval design and propulsion systems. One of its flagship initiatives, Swap2Zero, co-funded by the European Union’s Innovation Fund (Emissions Trading System), represents a major R&D project focused on achieving zero-emission cruising.
Ponant has also made substantial progress in waste reduction and resource management. The elimination of single-use plastics is now fully operational, preventing 20 tons of plastic waste annually. The company produces drinking water directly from seawater aboard its ships, and 100 percent of onboard waste is now sorted. In partnership with port authorities, Ponant aims to ensure 50 percent of waste recovery by 2026.
The company’s sustainability commitment extends beyond the environment to include local community support. The ice-class vessel Le Commandant Charcot aids Inuit communities in Greenland by delivering essential supplies earlier in the year, shortening winter isolation by a month. Meanwhile, in Polynesia, the m/s Paul Gauguin offers free medical consultations and care to residents of the Marquesas Islands and other remote archipelagos.
Ponant’s 2024 Sustainability Report underscores the company’s dedication to responsible exploration, combining technological innovation, environmental stewardship, and community engagement to redefine the future of sustainable luxury cruising.
