Pratt & Whitney Unveils A320neo GTF Engine Upgrade With Longer Wing Time

Share

Pratt & Whitney has announced a new engine upgrade option for Airbus A320neo operators that will nearly double the time on wing for its current GTF engines. The upgrade, introduced on the opening day of the 2025 Paris Air Show, is called Hot Section Plus (HS+) and will be available for the PW1100G-JM engine starting in 2026.

Derived from Pratt & Whitney’s advanced GTF Advantage engine, the HS+ upgrade will deliver 90 to 95 percent of the GTF Advantage’s durability benefits. Nick Tomassetti, Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Pratt & Whitney, emphasized that HS+ allows operators of the current GTF model to significantly extend wing time and reduce maintenance intervals.

GTF engines with the HS+ upgrade will remain fully interchangeable with both existing GTF and GTF Advantage models, offering operators greater flexibility and simplified fleet management. The HS+ package involves around 35 parts and will be installed during routine maintenance visits.

According to Pratt & Whitney, the GTF Advantage engine features the most advanced hot section in the single-aisle aircraft segment. Key improvements in the high-pressure turbine include upgraded airfoil designs with improved coatings, along with optimized cooling hole size, shape, and placement. Advanced drilling techniques further reduce oxidation, enhancing durability.

This upgrade marks another step forward in Pratt & Whitney’s commitment to improving engine performance, reliability, and lifecycle cost-efficiency for A320neo operators worldwide.
