Princess Cruises and Holland America Line are stepping in to support the rebuilding of a historic community landmark in Ketchikan, Alaska, following a devastating fire that destroyed the Joseph T. Craig American Legion Post 3 in September 2023.

The blaze, which leveled Alaska’s oldest American Legion post, was later determined to be arson. Authorities identified a 30-year-old Ketchikan resident as responsible, and he subsequently pleaded guilty to second-degree arson and first-degree criminal mischief in connection with the incident. The building had stood for more than 85 years and served as a central gathering place for veterans and the wider local community.

In response, the two cruise brands have announced a combined investment of $175,000 in 2026 to support reconstruction efforts. Princess Cruises will contribute $100,000 through the Princess Foundation, while Holland America Line has committed $75,000. Part of Holland America’s funding will come from its On Deck for a Cause program, which raises money through onboard charitable initiatives in Alaska.

Both cruise lines maintain a strong presence in Ketchikan as part of their Alaska itineraries and have longstanding ties to the destination. Beyond the initial funding, Princess Cruises and Holland America Line have also pledged continued support for the rebuilding project in the coming years, reinforcing their commitment to the communities they serve.

Founded in 1919, American Legion Post 3 has played a vital role in Ketchikan for more than a century, providing support, services, and a sense of connection for veterans and their families. The loss of the building represented not only the destruction of a historic site but also a disruption to an important community hub.

“This generous support from Princess Cruises and Holland America Line is a meaningful step forward in our rebuilding journey,” said Bill Bolling of American Legion Post 3. “While the loss of our building was devastating, this partnership helps ensure our mission will continue for generations. We are deeply grateful for their commitment to honoring veterans and strengthening our community.”

The rebuilding effort is expected to restore not just a physical structure, but a longstanding symbol of service, resilience, and community in Ketchikan.
