Q1 2025 Americas Routes Expand Global Connectivity

Share

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) is set to unveil a host of new long-distance services that are among the most eye-catching routes in the Americas this first quarter of 2025. Following a tentative confirmation last October by the U.S. Transportation Department (DOT), five major carriers—Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines—have been awarded coveted beyond-perimeter slots at DCA. These slots allow service expansion to new and existing markets beyond the airport’s 1,250-mile perimeter rule, heralding a significant shift in U.S. air travel connectivity.

Under the new initiative, Alaska, American, Delta, and Southwest are each launching new routes, while United Airlines is adding a second daily flight to San Francisco beginning February 13. On that same day, Southwest will launch daily operations from DCA to Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport. This marks a bold move by Southwest to strengthen its long-distance service offering and expand its market reach.

American Airlines is also stepping up its service, with daily flights from DCA to San Antonio International Airport commencing on March 2. Delta Air Lines will follow suit, introducing daily service to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on March 9, while Alaska Airlines will complete the new offerings with a daily route to San Diego International Airport starting March 18. These routes are expected to boost travel options for both leisure and business passengers, offering more flexible scheduling and improved connectivity.

Transatlantic services will see significant enhancements during Q1 2025. American Airlines is launching flights between Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Madrid, and Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) is introducing flights linking Oslo with New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)—a route served for the first time in more than 30 years. Additionally, Virgin Atlantic is returning to the Canadian market with a new route to Toronto Pearson International Airport, expanding transatlantic options for travelers.

Further bridging continents, Arkia Israeli Airlines is increasing U.S.-Middle East connectivity by offering a route between Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport and New York JFK. Royal Jordanian is also expanding its network with a new service from Amman to Washington Dulles International Airport. In other notable developments, Brazil’s GOL Linhas Aereas is set to launch flights from Brasilia to Venezuela’s capital Caracas, operating via Routes Americas 2024 host Bogota. JetBlue is entering the market with a new route to Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, and Japanese low-cost carrier Zipair Tokyo is expanding its U.S. presence with a route to Houston.
