Qantas Condemns Inappropriate Remarks by Pilots in Internal Chat Forum

Qantas, the prominent airline, has strongly denounced the offensive and wholly unacceptable comments made by pilots about their female colleagues within a discussion forum. The posts in question, which were shared in the forum, were exposed by the Herald Sun on August 3, 2023.

Among the problematic messages was one implying a perceived rise in female pilots within a particular age bracket seeking flexible work arrangements after starting families. This commentary drew significant criticism for its discriminatory undertones.

According to reports, two of the pilots involved in the chat forum have since departed from Qantas, while the third is currently undergoing an investigation and has been restricted from operating aircraft.

The Herald Sun revealed that the group’s moderator held the position of captain, and certain messages date back to as early as 2018. Another post within the forum suggested an undue advantage for women pilots, insinuating that they could engage in non-flying roles with higher pay while also managing family responsibilities.

The airline’s newly appointed CEO, Vanessa Hudson, came under scrutiny as well due to her introduction of a pilot scholarship initiative designed to support 50 female students and individuals from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds in May 2023. Some forum participants connected the timing of her appointment with the revelation of the discriminatory remarks.

Expressing the company’s stance on the matter, Qantas’ chief pilot, Dick Tobiano, issued a statement emphasizing the utter inappropriateness of the comments. Tobiano categorically stated that such remarks are offensive and misaligned with the company’s core values, asserting that they have no place within the workplace. He highlighted the presence of numerous accomplished female pilots at Qantas and expressed the company’s desire to foster increased female representation.

Tobiano further acknowledged the historical challenges within the aviation industry and conceded that outdated thinking persists in certain circles. He affirmed that despite criticism directed at diversity programs, Qantas remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting inclusivity.
