Qantas Customers Affected by Cyber Fraud Incident

More than 800 Qantas customers have been impacted by a cyber fraud incident where contractors in India attempted to steal frequent flyer information. The fraud, which took place over several weeks in July 2024, was confirmed by Qantas on October 7, 2024.

Two contractors working for Air India SATS, a company providing ground and cargo services at five major airports in India, have been suspended for allegedly making unauthorized changes to customer bookings and trying to transfer points to accounts they managed. The contractors also reportedly accessed customer booking details, including passport information, through external airline booking systems.

Qantas apologized to customers for the “fraudulent activity” and confirmed that several airlines were affected. “As soon as we became aware of this, we worked closely with our airline partners to secure their systems,” a Qantas spokesperson said.

The airline clarified that the issue was not the result of a cyberattack but rather the actions of “two rogue employees” abusing their access. The fraudulent activity was halted in August, and customers’ points and status credits have since been restored. No current bookings were affected.
Indian authorities are continuing to investigate the case.
