Qantas has marked a significant expansion in its international service offerings by launching the first Airbus A380 flight from Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport (SYD) to Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) on September 30, 2024. This inaugural flight, designated as QF 63, represents the first time Qantas has operated the Superjumbo aircraft to Africa, adding an exciting new chapter to its long history of service to the continent.

Departing Sydney at 09:58 local time, the A380 is scheduled to complete the journey to Johannesburg in approximately 14 hours and 25 minutes, landing around 16:23 local time. The route will now see up to six weekly A380 flights, significantly increasing the airline’s capacity on this key international corridor. Qantas estimates that this new service will add an extra 130,000 seats between Australia and Africa annually.

Passengers traveling on this route will experience enhanced comfort and luxury, as the A380 service reintroduces First Class service to Johannesburg for the first time since 2018. The First Class cabin on the A380 offers 14 individual suites in a 1-1-1 configuration, each capable of converting into a 212-centimeter bed, providing an exceptionally comfortable travel experience. Additionally, the introduction of the A380 will more than double the number of Premium Economy seats available, catering to a growing demand for upgraded service options.

This upgrade coincides with Qantas announcing a new codeshare partnership with Johannesburg-based carrier Airlink, which will substantially expand its network reach into South Africa. This partnership not only enhances connectivity but also strengthens the cultural and economic ties between the two regions.

Cam Wallace, CEO of Qantas International, commented on the significance of the A380 service, noting, “Qantas has a rich history of flying to South Africa over the past 72 years, having operated Constellations and Super Constellations, Electras, 707s, 747s, Dreamliners, and now the A380.” He added, “The A380 is a favorite among our frequent flyers, and it will be great to see the Flying Kangaroo in the land of the springbok. This extra capacity, combined with our new codeshare with Airlink, will significantly expand the options for Qantas customers heading to Africa.”

Qantas’ historical relationship with South African air travel dates back to 1948, with the first survey flight operated by a Lancastrian from Sydney via various international stops to Johannesburg. The first passenger services began in 1952 using a Lockheed Constellation L-749A on what became known affectionately as the Wallaby Route—a playful counterpart to the Kangaroo Route to London.

The introduction of the A380 service by Qantas is a testament to the airline’s commitment to improving passenger experience and expanding its global footprint. This service not only facilitates greater travel flexibility but also supports enhanced trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges between Australia and Africa.
