Qatar Airways Flight Declares Emergency Before JFK Landing

Share

A Qatar Airways flight from Doha to New York declared an emergency over U.S. airspace due to a low tire pressure warning and a miscommunication between air traffic control sectors. The incident occurred as Flight QR703, operated by a Boeing 777-300ER, approached John F. Kennedy International Airport on August 4.

As the aircraft neared U.S. airspace, pilots reported low pressure in one of the main landing gear tires, which could have impacted braking performance. The flight crew requested JFK’s longer Runway 4L through Boston Center, anticipating the need for additional stopping distance. However, the request was not passed on to New York Approach, which initially assigned a shorter runway instead.

The oversight prompted the Qatar Airways pilots to re-explain their concern, triggering a quick reassignment to Runway 4L. JFK Tower controllers activated emergency procedures after learning of the mechanical issue. The aircraft, carrying 354 passengers and 19 crew members, landed safely and taxied without assistance to its gate.

No injuries were reported, and the landing was conducted smoothly despite the earlier miscommunication. Aviation authorities are expected to investigate the lapse in air traffic coordination between Boston and New York control centers. The incident highlights the critical role of timely communication in handling in-flight mechanical issues.

Qatar Airways has not commented publicly on the matter, but the flight crew’s professionalism has been noted as instrumental in ensuring a safe outcome.
