Qatar Airways to Abandon First Class and Focus on Business Class Instead
Qatar Airways, a leading global airline, recently announced its decision to discontinue first class seats on its future Boeing 777X aircraft. The airline aims to enhance its business class product, considering it the new benchmark for premium travel.
During a press conference on June 3, 2023, Qatar Airways’ CEO, Akbar Al-Baker, stated the airline’s belief that first class is becoming obsolete, while business class offers a superior experience. Al-Baker emphasized their commitment to providing a significantly enhanced business class product compared to other airlines’ first-class offerings.
In addition to the upgraded business class, Qatar Airways will introduce a new and improved economy class on the Boeing 777X aircraft. Passengers can expect increased comfort and spaciousness in this new offering.
Qatar Airways has placed an order for 60 Boeing 777X aircraft, scheduled for delivery from 2024 onwards. The 777X represents the latest and largest variant of the Boeing 777 family, featuring advancements such as a redesigned wing, larger windows, and a lower cabin altitude.
Currently operating a fleet of over 250 aircraft, including Airbus A350s, A380s, A330s, and Boeing 787s, 777s, and 747s, Qatar Airways offers first class seats on select A380s and A350-1000s. However, this service will no longer be available on their other aircraft.
Renowned for its award-winning business class product, Qatar Airways provides lie-flat seats, direct aisle access, large entertainment screens, and a dine-on-demand service. The airline also offers Qsuite, an innovative business class product that includes sliding doors, movable panels, and double beds.
Qatar Airways’ decision to prioritize business class over first class aligns with a prevailing trend in the aviation industry. Many airlines, including Emirates, Etihad Airways, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, and British Airways, have opted to reduce or eliminate their first class cabins in favor of more profitable and efficient business class offerings.
