Qatar Airways to Resume Flights to Syria After Decade-Long Break

Qatar Airways has announced the resumption of flights to Syria after more than a decade-long hiatus, marking a significant milestone for the airline. Beginning January 2, 2025, Qatar Airways will operate thrice-weekly flights between Hamad International Airport (DOH) in Doha and Damascus International Airport (DAM) in Syria. This move comes after Syria’s ongoing civil war and the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad by opposition groups, including Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA).

The decision to restart operations to Syria reflects Qatar Airways’ commitment to enhancing regional connectivity and responding to passenger demand. The airline emphasized that it is working closely with local authorities to meet all necessary safety, security, and operational standards ahead of the relaunch. Qatar Airways Group CEO, Mohammed Al-Meer, commented, “We are pleased to resume flights to Damascus, a destination of great historical and cultural importance. This announcement underscores our dedication to fostering connectivity and facilitating travel for our passengers.”

While Qatar Airways is resuming service, several other airlines are already operating flights to Damascus. Syrian Air, UR Airlines, and Cham Wings Airlines are among the carriers flying into the capital, and an Egyptair flight from Cairo is scheduled to arrive in Damascus on January 4, 2025. Despite the turbulent history of Syria’s civil war, Qatar Airways’ decision to resume flights signals a shift toward rebuilding regional air travel and supporting economic and cultural exchange.

Qatar Airways will continue to monitor the situation closely and work with the relevant authorities to ensure safe operations for passengers traveling between Doha and Damascus.
