Recovery Tracker: the global market

As airlines and airports around the world recover from the challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic, Routes’ latest infographic looks at the current state of the global aviation market.

Capacity reduced across all world regions apart from Africa last week (w/c Sept. 7). However, growth in Africa was only marginal. North America recorded the biggest fall in capacity, with the number of departure seats reducing by almost 816,000—or 6.8%—compared with the previous seven days. Middle East capacity dropped by 6.2% and Europe was down by 2.5%.

Vietnam topped the list of countries by week-on-week capacity growth, adding more than 90,000 departure seats last week as restrictions were eased in Da Nang. Of the countries with the biggest decrease in capacity, the US topped the list, losing in excess of 805,000 seats compared with the previous week.

The top 10 airports in the world a year ago offered a combined 10.4 million departure seats. The same 10 airports last week offered 4.6 million. The biggest airport in the world during the last seven days was again Guangzhou (CAN), with more than 761,000 departure seats.
