Riyadh Air Postpones Launch to 3Q25 Due to Aircraft Delays

Riyadh Air (RXI, Riyadh) has delayed its inaugural launch from the first quarter of 2025 to the third quarter due to aircraft delivery setbacks, according to Bloomberg. The state-owned start-up had initially planned to receive eight Boeing 787-9s in 2025 but has been advised by Boeing to expect delivery of only around four.

“I am confident, given the latest forecast, that we’ll get deliveries this year,” said Riyadh Air CEO Tony Douglas. “Is it completely without risk? Obviously no, it’s not.”

Riyadh Air has thirty-nine Boeing 787-9s on order, alongside sixty Airbus A321-200Ns, according to the ch-aviation fleets module. Despite industry-wide challenges, the airline remains committed to its 2025 launch.

“The arrival of the first Boeing 787-9 will allow operations to commence as soon as possible,” a Riyadh Air spokesperson said. “Major parts of the first aircraft are already prepared for final assembly, and delivery is expected to begin in the third quarter, enabling operations to follow shortly after.”

Boeing, which delivered 51 Boeing 787s in 2024, compared to 73 in 2023, cited supply chain delays, regulatory requirements, and a mechanics strike as contributing factors to the slowdown.

A Boeing representative stated, “We continue to work closely with Riyadh Air on their delivery schedule and look forward to supporting their inaugural operations.”

Despite these setbacks, Riyadh Air is optimistic about launching its premium services and enhancing Saudi Arabia’s position in global aviation.
