Riyadh Air Set to Choose Airbus A350-1000 as Flagship Jet

Riyadh Air is expected to announce a major widebody aircraft order in the coming weeks, with industry reports indicating the airline will select the Airbus A350-1000 as its flagship aircraft. The order, anticipated at the Paris Air Show from June 16 to 22, 2025, could include around 50 A350s, focusing primarily on the larger A350-1000 variant.

Riyadh Air, backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, is set to begin operations by late 2025. The airline has already committed to a fleet of up to 72 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and up to 60 Airbus A321neos as part of its aggressive growth strategy. While previously considering the Boeing 777X for its flagship role, the carrier now appears to be favoring the A350 due to its earlier availability and stronger delivery prospects.

The A350-1000 offers extended range, high passenger capacity, and excellent fuel efficiency, making it well-suited for long-haul routes from Riyadh to major global destinations. With the Boeing 777X program delayed and certification still pending, Riyadh Air’s preference for the A350-1000 reflects a desire for near-term reliability and proven performance.

Although the airline will initially launch with 787-9 aircraft, the A350 is expected to take over key premium routes and may feature a first-class product, unlike the Dreamliners. As Riyadh Air positions itself as a world-class carrier, the A350-1000 will likely become the centerpiece of its long-haul offering, supporting Saudi Arabia’s broader Vision 2030 goals to boost global connectivity and tourism.
