Riyadh Air is preparing to welcome its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner into its fleet, marking a significant milestone for the startup as it gears up for both technical spare operations and flight training. In a statement issued on January 9, 2025, the airline confirmed that the leased B787-9 will soon arrive in Riyadh, setting the stage for a major boost in operational capability. This aircraft is separate from the carrier’s widebody order placed with Boeing in March 2023, underscoring a multi-faceted approach to fleet development.

According to ch-aviation research, the aircraft has been registered in Saudi Arabia as HZ-RXX (msn 38892). The 7.8-year-old jet, which previously flew for Oman Air under the registration A4O-SD, is now set for a new lease with Riyadh Air. The aircraft is leased from Park Aerospace Holdings, while its operations are managed by Avolon, a leader in aircraft leasing management. The Dreamliner recently ferried to Abu Dhabi International Airport on December 16, 2024, still operating under its former Omanese registration. It remains parked at the Emirati airport awaiting final re-registration before its transfer to Riyadh Air’s fleet.

The innovative nature of the transaction reflects Riyadh Air’s forward-thinking approach to creating solutions in a competitive aviation market. “The opportunity to lease this plane demonstrates the innovative nature of Riyadh Air to create solutions,” stated the airline in its official release. With the acquisition of this Boeing 787-9, the carrier is focusing on leveraging a modern, fuel-efficient aircraft not only as a technical spare but also as a crucial tool for training new pilots and enhancing its operational readiness.

While the new Dreamliner will initially be used for technical and training purposes, it is expected to play an integral role in supporting the airline’s broader strategic goals as it prepares for full commercial operations later in 2025. Currently, Riyadh Air has yet to secure its Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) from Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA). However, industry sources anticipate that the AOC will be issued shortly, paving the way for the airline to commence its commercial operations later in the year.

This fleet addition comes as part of Riyadh Air’s broader vision to build a modern, versatile fleet that will enable it to compete in both domestic and international markets. The Dreamliner, known for its advanced technology and excellent fuel economy, is an ideal asset for a startup aiming to enhance safety, efficiency, and training capabilities. Once fully integrated into the airline’s operations, the B787-9 will provide a platform for developing robust maintenance, training, and operational procedures that are essential for success in the competitive aviation industry.

Riyadh Air’s strategic decision to lease the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner highlights its commitment to sustainability, operational excellence, and technological innovation. As the carrier prepares to obtain its AOC and launch commercial services, the addition of the Dreamliner is expected to help establish its reputation as a modern and efficient player in the Middle Eastern market.
