Rogue Wave Rocks Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship

Passengers aboard Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas experienced a frightening moment when a rogue wave struck the vessel during its return to Baltimore from Bermuda. The unexpected surge caused the 78,340-gross-ton ship to tilt sharply, creating temporary chaos in dining areas and bars.
The ship had departed Baltimore on September 20, 2025, for a five-night roundtrip voyage to Bermuda. On its journey back, the vessel was hit by an unusually large wave that caused it to rock heavily for several minutes. While no serious injuries were reported, the impact sent glassware and dishes crashing to the floor and startled passengers who had been enjoying their meals.
Videos shared on social media captured the dramatic scene. Diners can be seen gripping tables and chairs to avoid slipping as service carts and trays slid across the room. One passenger described the moment on TikTok, noting, “The ship hit some waves the wrong way and tipped for a few minutes. Everyone was holding on as not to slip.”
Rogue waves, also known as “freak waves,” are rare but powerful surges that can appear suddenly, often double the height of surrounding waves. While modern cruise ships are built to withstand extreme conditions, such incidents can still cause momentary alarm among guests.
Despite the scare, Vision of the Seas continued safely on its course and completed its return to Baltimore. The episode serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of ocean travel and the importance of cruise ship safety measures.
