Romanian AACR Suspends Bees Airlines Operating Certificate
The Romanian civil aviation authority (AACR) officially suspended the Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) of Bees Airlines (E8, Bucharest Henri Coanda) on January 14, 2025, following the carrier’s decision to cease all flight operations in late December 2024. This marks the end of operations for the struggling airline, which had faced mounting challenges in recent months.
Bees Airlines suspended its scheduled flights on December 20, 2024, and subsequently ferried its sole aircraft, an Airbus A320-200 registered as YR-BUZ (msn 1922), to Varna, Bulgaria, on December 22. The aircraft remains parked there but is still registered in Romania and listed in the airline’s Operations Specifications (OpSpecs). Despite the AACR’s suspension, the certificate’s revocation appears to have been initiated voluntarily by Bees Airlines, signaling a planned exit from operations.
The airline had focused on scheduled flights from Bucharest Henri Coanda, Suceava, and Moldova’s Chisinau International Airport. However, the carrier faced significant financial difficulties due to underwhelming demand for its services. Reports indicate that Bees Airlines had struggled to pay its staff in the months leading up to its operational suspension, suggesting deeper systemic issues in its business model.
The suspension of Bees Airlines’ AOC highlights the challenges faced by smaller carriers in an increasingly competitive aviation market. Insufficient demand, rising operational costs, and financial pressures have contributed to the downfall of several regional operators. With its only aircraft grounded and no plans to resume operations, Bees Airlines’ future appears uncertain, and its suspension underscores the importance of robust demand forecasting and financial planning in the aviation sector.
