Romania’s HiSky Europe Announces First US Route with Bucharest-New York Service in 2Q24
HiSky Europe, a Romanian airline, has officially announced its entry into the transatlantic market with the launch of a new service between Bucharest Henri Coanda and New York JFK, set to commence on June 7, 2024. This development marks a significant milestone for the airline, as it expands its international reach to the United States.
The airline plans to operate this new route four times a week, utilizing its recently acquired A330-200. This aircraft, the first and currently the only widebody in HiSky Europe’s fleet, began its service on December 22, 2023, with a charter flight from Bucharest to Krabi, Thailand. The A330-200, registered as YR-KID (msn 1138), represents a key asset in HiSky Europe’s strategic expansion plans.
This venture by HiSky Europe will be the first scheduled transatlantic service from Romania since TAROM, the national carrier, ceased its US flights in 2003. HiSky Europe’s decision to launch this route underscores the growing demand and opportunities in the transatlantic travel sector.
Previously, HiSky Europe had explored the possibility of serving the US market with its two A321-200NX(LR)s. However, such routes would push the limits of the aircraft type’s operational range. Besides the A330-200 and A321LRs, HiSky Europe’s fleet also includes four A320-200s. Additionally, its Moldovan counterpart, HiSky (H7, Chisinau), operates an A319-100.
While HiSky Europe did not immediately respond to inquiries from ch-aviation regarding potential plans to deploy the A321LRs on transatlantic routes, the introduction of the A330-200 service to New York JFK is a clear indication of the airline’s ambition to strengthen its international presence. This move reflects HiSky Europe’s commitment to connecting Romania with key global destinations, thereby enhancing its position in the competitive international aviation market.
