Boeing and Royal Brunei Airlines today announced the airline’s purchase of four 787 Dreamliners.

Royal Brunei Airlines announced on Feb. 20 the airline’s purchase of four Boeing 787 Dreamliners to modernize its widebody fleet. The airline’s selection of the 787-9 aligns with the airline’s long-term growth strategy, sustainability goals, and focus on passenger comfort.

“The upcoming arrival of the 787-9 Dreamliner marks a significant leap forward in our ongoing pursuit of innovation and excellence,” said Sabirin bin Haji Abdul Hamid, CEO of Royal Brunei Airlines. “Having operated the 787-8 for the past decade, this order ensures we continue to offer a product that our customers have come to appreciate. With an unwavering commitment to providing exceptional service and the highest safety standards, our new fleet will enable us to explore new growth opportunities, enhance our market appeal, and deliver an unparalleled travel experience to our passengers.”

Royal Brunei Airlines became the first Southeast Asian carrier to operate the 787 Dreamliner over a decade ago. With the finalization of this 787-9 order in February, to be recorded on Boeing’s Orders & Deliveries, the airline can accommodate more passengers and cargo over longer distances while operating with greater efficiency.

“By reinvesting in the 787 Dreamliner, Royal Brunei Airlines will continue to connect Brunei with the world, offering passengers the carrier’s renowned service and comfort,” said Brad McMullen, Boeing senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing. “The 787-9 will provide the versatility, efficiency, and range necessary for Royal Brunei Airlines to pursue expanding air travel and tourism opportunities.”

Currently, Royal Brunei Airlines operates five 787-8s, serving various destinations in Asia, Australia, the Middle East, and the United Kingdom. The 787-9, capable of carrying nearly 20% more passengers than the 787-8 and covering 14,010 km (7,565 nautical miles), will meet the carrier’s increasing capacity requirements on medium- and long-haul routes.

Boeing’s 2023 Commercial Market Outlook forecasts 6.9% annual fleet growth, with nearly 4,300 airplanes set to be delivered in Southeast Asia over the next two decades. Royal Brunei Airlines’ latest 787 order underscores the growing demand for widebody aircraft in Southeast Asia.

The 787 family offers enhanced comfort features, including improved air quality, lower cabin altitude, and turbulence-mitigating technology. Moreover, the 787 Dreamliner family reduces fuel consumption and emissions by up to 25% compared to its predecessors.
