Royal Caribbean Crew Member Dies After Falling Overboard

A tragic incident occurred aboard Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas on Thursday, July 24, when a crew member fell overboard and later died. The individual has not yet been publicly identified.

According to local reports from 7 News Miami, the ship’s man overboard alarm was triggered around 7:00 p.m. while the vessel was en route to Royal Caribbean’s private island, Coco Cay, in the Bahamas. Passengers reported hearing the announcement as crew members quickly initiated emergency procedures.

Video footage taken by a guest captured part of the rescue attempt. Despite the immediate response, the crew member’s body was recovered without signs of life. The cause of the fall has not been determined and is currently under investigation.

Royal Caribbean issued a statement expressing condolences: “Our crew immediately initiated a search and rescue operation, but unfortunately the crew member passed away. We extend our condolences to the crew member’s family and loved ones. To respect their privacy, we have no additional details to share.”

Despite the incident, the ship’s itinerary will continue as planned, with Icon of the Seas scheduled to return to Port Miami on Sunday, July 27.

Launched in January 2025, Icon of the Seas is the world’s largest cruise ship, with capacity for more than 5,000 passengers and 2,350 crew. The vessel features multiple entertainment venues, resort-style amenities, and serves as a flagship for Royal Caribbean’s next generation of cruise experiences.
