Royal Caribbean International has achieved a monumental milestone with the christening of the Icon of the Seas, officially making it the world’s largest cruise ship. The prestigious naming ceremony took place at Royal Caribbean’s Miami port, with global soccer superstar Lionel Messi serving as the official Icon for the new ship.

Michael Bayley, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, expressed his excitement and pride during the event. He emphasized the collective effort of his team in creating what he believes to be the world’s ultimate family vacation. Bayley’s sentiments were echoed by Jason Liberty, CEO of Royal Caribbean Cruises, who highlighted that the Icon of the Seas represents over 50 years of innovation, dreaming, and commitment to delivering top-tier vacations responsibly.

The Icon of the Seas is a marvel of modern engineering and design, stretching nearly 1,200 feet in length and weighing 250,800 gross tons. The ship boasts an impressive capacity to accommodate up to 7,600 guests along with a crew of 2,350. Among its standout features are over 40 diverse restaurants, bars, and lounges, eight unique neighborhoods, seven pools, nine whirlpools, and six groundbreaking waterslides.

A notable innovation aboard the ship is the AquaDome, the largest glass and steel structure ever installed on a cruise ship. The Icon of the Seas also promises a rich entertainment experience with more than 75 world-class performers, including musicians and comedians. Adding a unique touch to the crew is Rover, the ship’s Chief Dog Officer.

As the first of its class, Icon of the Seas is a trailblazer for Royal Caribbean, with two more ships in the series scheduled for delivery in 2025 and 2026. The ship is set to embark from Miami on various itineraries to the Caribbean, including stops at Royal Caribbean’s exclusive private island, Perfect Day at Coco Cay.

This launch marks a significant moment in the cruise industry, setting a new standard for size, luxury, and entertainment at sea. The Icon of the Seas not only reinforces Royal Caribbean’s position as a leader in cruise vacations but also showcases their commitment to innovation and excellence in maritime travel.
