Royal Caribbean Restricts Smart Glasses Use Onboard

Royal Caribbean has introduced new restrictions limiting the use of smart glasses in certain areas onboard its ships, marking a new step in cruise security and passenger privacy policies. The update, first reported by Royal Caribbean Blog, outlines where wearable devices capable of recording video and audio are prohibited.
According to the cruise line’s revised prohibited items list, “‘Smart’ glasses from any of several manufacturers that can record video and audio are not allowed to be used in certain areas onboard the ship, including, but not limited to, public restrooms, Youth Program areas, medical areas, as well as the casino.” The policy applies regardless of brand and is designed to prevent passengers from being recorded without their knowledge or consent.
The restriction reflects growing concerns across the travel industry about privacy and the rapid adoption of wearable technology. Smart glasses, which can discreetly capture photos, video and audio, have raised questions about how cruise lines can balance innovation with guest safety. By limiting their use in sensitive areas, Royal Caribbean aims to reduce potential privacy violations and mitigate security risks onboard.
The new rule applies to all brands of smart glasses, including popular models such as Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses. While guests are still permitted to bring smart glasses onboard, they are advised to carry traditional eyewear if needed in spaces where recording devices are not allowed.
Royal Caribbean’s move follows similar action by MSC Cruises, which implemented a stricter policy in late 2025 banning the use of smart glasses across all areas of its fleet. At present, Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises are the only major cruise lines to publicly introduce specific smart glasses restrictions.
As wearable technology continues to evolve, cruise operators are increasingly updating onboard policies to address emerging privacy and security challenges. Royal Caribbean’s latest restriction signals that cruise lines are taking proactive steps to adapt to new technology while prioritizing passenger comfort, safety and compliance with onboard conduct rules.
