Share

Royal Caribbean International is calling on Caribbean artists to showcase their talents through its “Artist Discovery Program” ahead of the debut of its newest ship, Star of the Seas, launching from Port Canaveral in August 2025. This initiative offers artists a unique opportunity to contribute to the ship’s design with stunning murals that celebrate the culture and beauty of the Caribbean.

Opportunities for Caribbean Artists

Selected artists will be commissioned to create large-scale murals in four prominent locations aboard Star of the Seas, including:

  • The Royal Promenade neighborhood
  • The embarkation area
  • The Suite Sundeck Lobby
  • Additional high-visibility spaces

These commissioned pieces aim to immerse guests in the vibrancy of Caribbean art and culture. Each artist will receive a grant ranging from $20,000 to more than $100,000 to bring their visions to life. The murals will be created in Turku, Finland, where the ship is currently under construction.

A Celebration of Caribbean Creativity

This marks the second iteration of Royal Caribbean’s Artist Discovery Program, which debuted during the launch of Icon of the Seas. The program’s first cohort saw 140 submissions from 25 Caribbean countries, with murals created by talented artists like:

  • Angelika Wallace-Whitfield from The Bahamas
  • Phillipe Dodard from Haiti
  • Jason Hospedales from Trinidad & Tobago

“Our goal is to connect our guests to the enduring beauty and creativity of the Caribbean,” said Jay Schneider, chief product innovation officer for Royal Caribbean International. “This immersive program celebrates and explores local culture while onboard the next Icon of vacations—Star of the Seas.”

How to Apply

Artists interested in participating must submit their applications by February 15, 2025. Submissions should include:

  1. Five samples of original artwork.
  2. A brief artist statement.
  3. A resume or CV.

Royal Caribbean aims to spotlight rising Caribbean artists, offering them an unparalleled platform to share their stories and connect with a global audience of cruise travelers.

Continuing the Legacy of Iconic Design

The Star of the Seas represents the next chapter in Royal Caribbean’s fleet and is part of its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and celebrating the regions its ships explore. Through initiatives like the Artist Discovery Program, the cruise line brings local culture onboard, offering guests an immersive connection to the destinations they visit.

With significant grants and high-profile exposure, the program underscores Royal Caribbean’s dedication to promoting Caribbean art and talent while enhancing its ships with vibrant, meaningful creations.
