Royal Caribbean Unveils Plans for New Discovery Class of Ships, Announces Second Vessel for Los Angeles
During a recent preview cruise aboard the Utopia of the Seas, Royal Caribbean CEO Michael Bayley announced the development of a new class of ships known as Discovery Class. This exciting new initiative is designed to create smaller, more versatile vessels capable of accessing ports with restrictive bridge heights, such as Baltimore and Tampa. Bayley hinted that while specific details are still under wraps, Discovery Class will offer innovative solutions for navigating these challenging ports.
In addition to the Discovery Class reveal, Bayley and the Royal Caribbean executive team disclosed plans to enhance their presence in Los Angeles. Starting May 28, 2025, the Ovation of the Seas will begin offering three-, five-, and six-night cruises from the Port of Los Angeles. This Quantum Class vessel will join the existing Navigator of the Seas, which has been homeported in L.A. for 22 years. The addition of the Ovation of the Seas marks a significant upgrade, as it is a newer vessel, having been introduced in 2016.
Bayley also hinted at future expansion, suggesting that successful sales efforts for the Ovation of the Seas could lead to the introduction of the line’s newest Icon Class ships, including the recently unveiled Icon of the Seas. He teased that Royal Caribbean is considering a significant presence in Texas with upcoming Icon Class vessels, including the Star of the Seas, slated to launch in late summer 2025.
These announcements underscore Royal Caribbean’s commitment to expanding its fleet and enhancing its service offerings, promising more diverse and exciting options for travelers in the coming years.
